Experience Visual Art That Provokes and Compels Thought and Emotion
The term provocative is normally associated with something salacious and sexual, even offensive. However, the sexually salacious is now ubiquitous across the web. I contend that the new provocative is that which compels thought and contemplation; requiring time to understand and digest. The idea that something cannot be grasped in a couple of seconds has now, by default, become the most provocative element in social media. We no longer want to spend time on something; ironically, we have been indoctrinated into believing we can grasp the whole of something in a couple of seconds. If we can’t, it’s too much work and we move on to something entirely less challenging. My work is an anathema to such quick and easily understood images.

The Role of Offensive Art
Edouard Manet’s Le déjeuner sur l’herbe (Luncheon on the Grass) was painted in 1863. Rejected by the jury of the 1863 Salon, Manet exhibited Le déjeuner sur l’herbe under the title Le Bain at the Salon des Refusés (initiated the same year by Napoléon III) where it became the principal attraction, generating both laughter and scandal.
In 1863,the presence of a nude woman among clothed men was justified neither by mythological nor allegorical precedents. This, and the contemporary dress, rendered the strange and almost unreal scene obscene in the eyes of the public of the day. Manet himself jokingly nicknamed his painting “la partie carrée” (the square party, two men and two women).
In those days, Manet’s style and treatment were considered as shocking as the subject itself.
